Mathews is a small rural county with a population of just around 8800 and located in the Middle Peninsula of the Commonwealth of Virginia. With only 86 square miles of land and 166 square miles of water we are considered the 2nd smallest county in the Commonwealth by land area. We may be small, but we are rich in history! From the Chiskiake tribe which inhabited the area prior to the first know English Settlement around 1650, to the deep roots in Mariner and Military history and of course our historical properties, buildings and homes which is where our story begins….

This is the L. M. Callis House and the catalyst for Preservation Mathews, Inc. This beautiful 105 year old home with it's twin gables, original windows, shutters, siding, wonderful columned front porch and its original Buckingham slate roof was scheduled for demolition! With very little time, a handful of citizens got together and with some wheeling and dealing the group was able to obtain a private loan and made arrangements to move the house saving it from the wrecking ball!

We are 501 (c) (3) organization and are currently working on fundraising to re-pay our loan and focusing on how we want to move forward to reach our mission's goals.
